A sculpture with the function of sitting as a chair. Or, a chair with the presence of a sculpture.
I have always thought that furniture has a sculptural element.
For example, in the case of a chair, comfort, durability, lightness, storage efficiency, etc. are often called functions,
but I believe that a sculptural presence is also included in the function of a tool.
While maintaining the expression of a chair, it is a tool that can have an expression that inspires the perception of presence, like a sculpture.
I think that the dimensions, spatiality, and embodiment of furniture are the main reasons for this.
ASoAC is a chair that is far more on the sculptural side than the furniture side. (ASoAC comes from "a sculpture or a chair")
The shape and dimensions of the chair are determined by testing to what degree it is a good balance, rather than swinging out.
A chair will be comfortable if the dimensions are kept. We explored the shape based on this principle.
It was a very interesting exploration, and the results revealed new possibilities as a tool.
This chair is beautiful as a stand-alone piece, but it is also beautiful when a person sits on it.
椅子として座れる機能を持つ彫刻。もしくは、彫刻のような存在感を備えた椅子。
家具には、彫刻的な要素があると予てから思っていた。
例えば椅子なら、座り心地、頑丈さ、軽さ、収納効率などを機能と呼びがちだが、彫刻的存在感もその機能に含まれる道具だと思う。
椅子としての表現を保ちながらも、彫刻のように存在の感知を促す表現が可能な道具だろう。
家具が持つ寸法、空間性、身体性が大きな理由だと思うが、それを彫刻側にかなり振ったのが、ASoACだ。
振り切るのではなく、どこまで振るのが良いバランスなのだろうか…という事を検証しながら形と寸法を決めていく。
椅子は、寸法を守れば座り心地が良くなる。その原則を活かして形を探究する。
とても面白い探究だったし、道具としての新しい可能性が見える結果だった。
椅子単体としても美しいが、人が座った時の美しさも良い。
